When teaching guitar, I'm always trying to help the student build their own mental map of the fretboard.

I think of it like the occasoinal times I walk through a familiar city, take a road I've never been down and realise it joins an area I know very well.

Building the mental map of any instrument is just like that. You have your landmarks - fret markers - and the routes you might take to join the various scales together as you weave notes together to create a melody. You memorise, modify & combine patterns as you progress. All of which result in an extremely detailed & personal mental map.

Building a mental map of the Bitcoin protocol can be thought of as a similar idea. Maybe you start with the 21 million hard cap and you associate that with the difficulty adjustment which leads you to thinking of the block rewards or hash rate. Maybe as a separate island of thought, you consider UTXO management and that leads you to thinking you need to understand consolidation.
